Choosing A Hypnotherapist

The Irish Hypnotherapy Association have issued the following guidelines to help you to find the right hypnotherapist to help you reach your goal.

When you first call a hypnotherapist ask as many questions as you feel comfortable with. For example:

How many sessions will I need?

How long will each session last?

How will I know I have been hypnotised?

What success do you have with this kind of problem?

Where did you train?

What organisations are you affiliated with?

Can I bring a friend for part of the session?

Will you make a recording of the session for me to take home?

How will I know I have reached my goal?

A good hypnotherapist will spend time speaking to you on the phone in advance of you booking an appointment. They will be able to give you a clear indication of what they can do to help. They will tell you how many session they think you will need and give you a realistic time frame in which to expect results. Their costs will be reasonable in relation to the time and commitment needed to overcome the challenge. They will be happy to answer any questions you may have and will be at pains to ensure you feel comfortable and at ease long before you book a session.

If they don’t put you at ease on the ‘phone, don’t book. Find someone else.

When you arrive for you appointment make sure –
Their office space is clean, tidy and suited to their profession. Check their qualifications by looking at framed certificates. If they are part of a professional organisation such as the Irish Hypnotherapy Association, they should have the Code of Ethics to which they adhere to displayed for your attention.

A good hypnotherapist will ask you to fill out a Client Form of some sort. All professional hypnotherapists are required by insurance law to keep records of clients. A good hypnotherapist will spend considerable time talking with you to determine exactly what your particular problem or challenge is.

They will listen and ask all of the right questions so that they can provide a specialised service that is tailored to your individual needs. They will explain hypnosis and how it will help you. They will outline how the therapy session will proceed so that you know what to expect.

They will carry out some hypnotic tests to discover the best way for you to experience hypnosis.

They will respect your personal space during the hypnotherapy and assure you that everything they will say to you during hypnosis will be positive and supportive of your reasons for seeking help. They will spend time after the hypnotherapy has ended to ensure your questions are answered and you are happy with the progress you are making.

The best hypnotherapists are the ones who will be willing to help you text your progress as you overcome a challenge, fear or phobia.

The Irish Hypnotherapy Association has a database of approved and properly trained hypnotherapists. All IHA hypnotherapists meet regularly to update and
